You know that at some point in the future, you will probably need to have surgery or some medical procedure that may arise unexpectantly. Would you be prepared? Studies show that patients who prepare themselves for surgery heal faster, experience less pain, have fewer complications and speedier recovery time. How do you keep the anxiety of surgery down so you experience a calmer, more positive surgical procedure?
1. Learn to relax yourself. Naturally, before any procedure, your nervous system becomes unbalanced and stressed. Train yourself to settle down so that your system can perform in a way that works for you, not against you. You can relax by meditating, playing with your pets, being around supportive friends, laughing, experiencing nature and practicing deep breathing. What you are doing is aligning yourself with the natural order of healing, which is preparing your body to function optimally.
2. Maintain your personal control. There are certain parts of the surgery you have no control over, but you do have control over some things. Ask questions. Get all your concerns, fears, doubts and anxiety out by going to your doctor with a list of questions. If he/she can’t spend much time with you, speak to the nurses, who are usually very knowledgeable. Speak to people who may have had a similar procedure. The more you know about what will happen, the more in control you’ll feel.
3. Expect the healing process to happen immediately. Your body is always working to bring back its natural balance. Keep your determination to get back to the way you were by focusing on being active, healthy and vibrant. Retain a healing mindset so that your attitude is positive and hopeful. Repeat positive affirmations over and over to reinforce your knowing that you will be OK. “I am strong and healthy” or “My recovery is fast and easy” are two suggestions.
Of course, there are no guarantees. But by approaching your surgery with confidence, hopefulness and an expectation of positive results, you will experience the best possible outcome. Baby boomers want their health care to be optimum and they are serious about getting it. Your focus on a positive encounter will reshape your experience with your health care providers and create a wiser, more confident patient in you.
