Baby Boomer’s Survival Guide for the Holidays

This is the start of the holiday season and I look forward to the visits from the kids and the rest of the family. I am lucky, though, because we are all very close and get along well. But I know that many boomers experience extra stress, anxiety and more aggravation than usual during this time of year, when there is so much to do and not enough time to do it. String together a few stressful days (weeks) and you’re feeling like your patience has been stretched to the limit.

How do you get through the holidays with your spirit and good will intact and actually enjoy yourself? Here are some suggestions:

1. Plan specific times with the relatives. This allows you space for yourself to do what you want.
2. Host celebrations at your home so you can invite who you want.
3. Be prepared for the unexpected and keep a sense of humor.
4. Just say no when you don’t want to see people who constantly make you feel stressed.
5. Surround yourself with friends and family that you like.
6. Avoid controversial topics with those who have strong personalities. Just nod and say very little.
7. Look for positive aspects of other people, since everyone has some redeeming qualities.
8. Know when it’s time to distance yourself.
9. You don’t have to be close with everyone, even if they are relatives. You just want to be cordial.
10. Keep smiling because New Year’s is right around the corner and it’ll all be over.

There are a lot of joyful and fun times associated with the holidays. If you can reduce the stress and increase the fun, you’ll be in good shape to survive the holidays and to keep the spirit of the season alive.
