Baby Boomer Statistics – What does it All Mean?
by Amy Sherman, LMHC
There are 77 million baby boomers and someone turns 50 every 8 seconds in this country. Over 2/3 of boomers spend time on the internet, using their email, making large purchases or gathering information for their health and personal well-being. Baby boomers are so internet savvy that they have become avid social networkers, admitting that the internet is an important resource for staying connected and up-to-date.
By the year 2015, over 45% of the US population will be people aged 50 plus.
What does this all mean? It means that you and I, along with Oprah, Bill Gates, Al Gore, Deepak Chopra, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg and the numerous other baby boomers in the world, have such a strong impact that we are creating a revolution of change.
You are part of an influential generation that is changing the socioeconomic landscape of our country. It is your devotion to hard work and youthfulness and your belief that your life is just getting started that is causing this transformation. Society is now focusing on prevention- centered health care, services that allow you to stay in your home, and flexible work schedules to meet your leisure and work needs. All the information you need to educate yourself when you’re making decisions, is available through the resources of the internet.
Your goal is to be aware that there are many different options open to you and that you should take advantage of the services and products specifically being developed for you. Be glad that you are part of this amazing generation and this amazing period of expanding awareness. You will benefit and reap the rewards tenfold, by staying abreast of the changes in store for the baby boomer generation.
