“Everything you do in life, should be an act of love for yourself” Is that being selfish? Absolutely, NOT! If you think about it, this is the most wonderful and generous thing you can do for yourself and those closest to you. Here’s why. If you are able to show others how it looks and feels to be a fulfilled human being who is enjoying life, rather than suffering from guilt and obligations, then you are a healthy role model. If you are able to identify elements throughout the day that are nurturing and supporting for your own personal welfare, then you are a healthy role model. In other words, you need to take responsibility for yourself, over others, because who will care for you if you don’t? How can you be a good parent, a good wife, a good friend if you are falling apart at the seams, with overwhelming responsibilities, commitments and stress?
What are some of these “acts of love for yourself” I am talking about?
- Allow yourself time to be alone to just be… and enjoy it!
- Make choices based on the joy of giving, rather than the guilt of obligation. For instance, do you have to go to the party or do you really want to go?
- Be responsible for creating things that make you happy. You do not need anyone to MAKE you happy, because you have the necessary elements for happiness to come to you. So, if you want to take adult ed classes, then do it. Or you want to learn to play tennis, go for it.
- Get rid of negative elements in your life and improve your personal surroundings. For example, change jobs, if you hate work; avoid or replace relationships, if friends or relatives are toxic; surround yourself with special photos, trinkets, etc that give you pleasure.
It’s not difficult to make sure that you are as significant as those around you. Don’t make the mistake of ignoring your needs. Go ahead and make everything you do from now on an act of love for yourself because your example is so important. Watch your happiness and joy exude and spill over to everyone you know, enhancing their world as well.
